Earlier studies have suggested that the Mediterranean style diet may reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome, and the team of Spanish researchers wanted to test the effectiveness of this type of diet plan verses a low fat diet.

Some people have difficulty digesting nuts and seeds and in this case, soaking them overnight initiates the sprouting process and improves digestibility. They are best consumed in limited amounts if weight loss is desired or if digestive difficulties are present, however in these situations the nuts and seeds rich in omega 3 fatty acids (flaxseed, walnut, chia and pumpkin seed) may be beneficial as these fats can actually improve metabolism.

Hazelnuts are rich in vitamins and minerals which are needed by the body to regulates its constant functions. It is also high in protein and fiber which helps your digestion runs smoothly. This type of nuts are good alternative source of protein for those who are not eating meats.

A specific vitamin that is abundantly found in hazelnut oil is Vitamin E, and you know that Vitamin E is very vital in keeping the heart muscles healthy. The oil also contains beta-sitosterol, which is found to be very helpful in decreasing cholesterol levels, and since cholesterol is closely related to triglycerides, that would explain the reason why hazelnut oil is believed to lower triglycerides as well.

Raw nuts are loaded with nutrients, and health benefits, so they are worth incorporating into your diet. Try adding a handful of cashews into a smoothie instead of dairy. You'll be surprised at how creamy they make the smoothie. They are great blended with dates and oats to make deliciously healthy pie crusts. There are many ways to sneak raw nuts into your diet without even realizing they are there.

The good cholesterol (also known as HDL or high density lipoprotein), takes the bad cholesterol (known as LDL or low density protein) out of your blood and keeps it from building up in your arteries. Too much bad cholesterol can increase your chances of getting cardiovascular disease. When being tested for high cholesterol, you want a high HDL number and a low LDL number.

Nuts are a great source of protein, and are considered a dry fruit. Nuts also contain fats, but the fats found in nuts are polyunsaturated or monounsaturated, which are good fats. Most nuts are a great source of the vitamin B group such as B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), and B3 (niacin). Nuts are also super sources for iron, vitamin E, fiber, magnesium, antioxidants, selenium, zinc, niacin, and amino acid.
